Japanese drumming sensation’s LIVE début with HKS

Premiered at the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2007, award-winning local composer/HKS Artist Associate (2006-2008) Ng Cheuk-yin’s Fly for drumset and orchestra shattered boundaries—not only the one between pop and symphonic classical music, but also the social boundaries imposed in 2020 during the COVID pandemic when the orchestra reinvented the work into Project FLY, a recorded performance released online and joined remotely by 26-year-old Japanese drumming sensation Senri Kawaguchi.

Widely recognised as one of the world’s top drummers, whose incredible skill and poise at such a young age is simply miraculous, Kawaguchi has amassed more than 40 million views on YouTube, and appeared at the Tokyo Jazz Festival and Blue Note Tokyo. Her astonishing virtuosity and breathtaking energy can now be experienced live, as she visits Hong Kong to perform the newest version of Ng’s Fly—as well as the world premiere of his An Array of Stars, with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and its Music Director Emeritus, Yip Wing-sie.
