Presented by: Hong Kong Dance Company
Co-presented by: Freespace, West Kowloon Cultural District
This October, as part of their 2020 residency at Freespace, Hong Kong Dance Company present Convergence – a new performance that captures the transient state between stillness and motion and between dance and martial arts.
The performance marks the culmination of an inter-disciplinary research study on Chinese martial arts and dance traditions. Over the course of three years, the artists have explored the essence of both traditional practices, extracting new perspectives on movement and the fluidity of expression between ideology and physical gesture. Convergence brings these explorations together in a blend of tranquillity and exuberance. In response to current live performance restrictions, Convergence will be pre-recorded and presented online.
About the Study
Designed as a platform for in-depth discussion and exploration on interdisciplinary collaborations, HKDC’s “Research study on Chinese martial arts and Chinese dance” explores new dance forms and new directions for traditional Chinese dance training. The research team includes HKDC artistic director Yang Yuntao, as well as dancers, kung fu masters, academic researchers and experts in the field.
HKDC in Residence 2020: Convergence is presented as part of Cypher – an encounter with dance and movement live and online at Freespace this autumn – and as part of the HKDC in Residence programme (2020–2022).
