This course continues the discussion of art and cultural theory relative to Greek tragedy. It shows the revelation of human existence and discusses the importance of Greek tragedy to art and cultural theory. How can it help to read cultural theory implied in art, and to read art in the perspective of cultural theory? 

Certain tragic figures such as Laocoön, Achilles, Ulysses, Penelope, Oedipus, Antigone, Saturn, Apollo, Dionysus, Narcissus, Socrates, Orpheus, Muses will be covered. 

We will also delve into topics like father-son relationship, time, fate, home, love, wisdom, man and nature, contest, art forms (theatre, music, sculpture, painting in particular) and more. These are all explored with reference to theorists that include Aristotle, Nietzsche, Blanchot, Benjamin, Adorno, Freud, and Lacan.

 

Tutor

Dr. Fong Ho Yin    

Dr. Fong Ho Yin teaches literary and cultural studies at various tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. In 2007, he received a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Hong Kong.
