Nativity Scene-Making Workshops “Krakow - Hong Kong Nativity Scene”

As part of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the tradition of Kraków nativity scenes. After a short presentation on the historical circumstances and the rules of the Krakow Nativity Scenes Competition, the theoretical part will be moved to the practical part. During its duration, each and everyone, following detailed instructions by the teacher, will be able to make one element of the Krakow nativity scene. The result of all the parts made during the workshop will be an entire Krakow nativity scene.



Program of 1.5-hour workshops:

1. Presentation of the lecturer and description of competences in the field of knowledge of the history of Krakow and participation in the nativity scene tradition.
2. Presentation on the history of nativity scenes and the Krakow Nativity Scenes Competition.
3. A story about the techniques of building Krakow nativity scenes.
4. Practical part - individual work of participants on one of the prepared semi-finished products: painting the window, cutting out the stained glass, wrapping the element with silverware.
5. Showing the results of work, gluing together or decorating a folding nativity scene.
6. Summary, thanks and invitation to the nativity scene exhibition.


About the lecturer
Filip Fotomajczyk

He graduated Fryderyk Chopin State General Educational School of Music 2nd degree in Kraków, and then graduated from Inter-faculty Individual Studies in the Humanities of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków in the fields of musicology and history. He has been dealing with Kraków nativity scene since 2004. So far, he has won 17 awards at the Krakow Nativity Scenes Competition - in the youth, miniature and special categories: the Jerzy Dobrzycki award (2016) and the Anna Szałapak award (2021) - for popularizing the nativity scene tradition and other artistic activity. In 2019, he received a Creative Scholarship from the City of Krakow for these activities. In cooperation with the Krakow Museum, he conducts city games and workshops - for Polish and English-speaking groups, since 2018 he has been co-running the Nativity Scene Competition at the Adam Mickiewicz monument. As a city guide, he takes walks in the footsteps of the nativity scenes and shows you around the annual Post-Competition Exhibition of Krakow Nativity Scenes.
