Empathy is the beginning step of human-centered design thinking, as well as the most important step. Through empathy, we learn to understand ourselves, others, things, and the world; through empathetic communication and reconnection, we discover the world through different individual’s eyes.

In light of a global pandemic and ubiquitous natural disasters, the fraught line between city and nature is increasingly blurred. While grown-ups and children are aware of the health crises faced by both the earth and humans, our relationship with nature seems only to grow distant by the day.

Humans have found infinite possibilities with the advancement of technology, and yet urban life is tightening the bounds of children’s physical and psychological experiences. As facets of reality become fragmented concepts, empathy will be the key to our rediscovery of intentional living.

The ways in which our young ones respond to nature will shape the forms of future city and family life. How can designers inspire the next generation to empathise, think, experience, and create solutions for a better and more empathetic world?

"20 years into the future, global warming has melted polar glaciers, and the coastal city 'Cloud Harbour' is facing imminent destruction due to rising water levels. Our protagonist Kapo travels back to the past to warn citizens, hoping to re-design Cloud Harbour as a floating city. However, she gradually discovers more hidden problems…"

Through theatrical storytelling, the programme guides students in understanding their own relationships with global warming, as well as analysing problems and generating possible solutions by using design thinking. In hands-on sessions, students learn to transform their ideas into simple architectural models.

Led by Littleurbanmoutain Design, the programme is joined by cross-disciplinary creatives including architects, designers, artisans, crafters, and theatre educators. Through a series of interactive activities, the team will lead P.3 and P.4 students to solve problems using design thinking techniques.

Teaching team

The teaching team led by Littleurbanmountain is comprised of multi-disciplinary local creatives, including architects, designers, makers/craftsmen and drama educators. The team will guide students in experiencing the process of design thinking through the creative workshop.

  • Littleurbanmountain is a collaborative platform that focuses on architecture, interior design and art in Hong Kong. Founded by architect Bong Yeung and theatre artist Lai Sim Fong in 2017, Littleurbanmountain is keen on exploring the relationship between architecture and human condition. Started by working on projects related to sustainable design and social architecture, the team now also creates art installations and participates in community, architectural and interior design projects.

In this age of technology, people have come to forget the pleasures of being in nature. While there has been a surge in camping activity due to pandemic restrictions, we are faced with problems involving destructive exploitation of natural resources.

This programme places kids in camping scenarios to inspire their sensory experiences of natural life. Through the application of design thinking, participating kids are prompted to create thoughtful solutions for empathising with the world, in order to find a balance between camping culture and environmental protection.

Led by AaaM Architects and partnering with innovation and technology group Tiebusa Design, the programme combines both teams’ strengths to create an educational experience with the theme “City Camping - Empathising Nature", which explores the perspectives of different camping participants. The result is a fun-filled adventure with a focus on cultivating empathy and social values.

*Sensory experiences are included in this Summer Camp.
